The European yew (Taxus baccata), also commonly known as the common yew or simply yew, was formerly known as Bogenbaum, Eue, Eve, Ibe, If, or Ifen (such as Iwe and Ife). It is the only European species in the yew genus (Taxus).
It is the oldest and most shade-tolerant tree species in Europe.
Only the red seed coat (aril) of the yew is edible; it has a sweet taste.
All other parts of the plant (needles, bark, wood, and seeds), however, are highly toxic and life-threatening!
